December2011 "Spanky" & "Rascal"

We had to put our 13 yr old mini schnauzer, Cosmo, down in June.DSCN0265.JPG
His absence left a large hole in our hearts and I didn't think I
could want another dog, at least not for a long time.

A dear friend at work sent me a photo of a schnauzer ready for adoption and that gave me the idea of looking at a schnauzer rescue website which is where I found a photo of Spanky and Rascal who were being offered for adoption by their owner. There had been a huge change in our family and while I didn't think that now would be a good time to add a dog, much less two, I just couldn't resist calling their owner
and inquiring about their availability. Naturally, that Friday afternoonrascal_1.JPG
I drove to her house to see the dogs. Two adorable minis, one white and one black, came thundering into the family room and greeted me with licks and kisses.I was in love immediately. Next thing I know I brought the
"fellows" home for a visit and to meet the family, and that's where they've been ever since. I can't thank their owner enough for giving me two of the most loving and wonderful dogs. They fit right into our family
and we adore them.

November 2011 "Sasha"

Sasha is a wonderful 6 year old Labrador Retriever Mix.

One afternoon her owners came running into SCPH carrying Sasha whoSash.JPG
was unable to use her back legs at all. Her owners said she had been in the yard chasing squirrels when they heard her yelp and saw her fall to the ground.  X-rays revealed that her spine was badly damaged and thus began her road to recovery.

Dr. Dean Filipowicz was called in immediately and after her MRI proceeded
to surgically repair the damage to Sasha’s back.

Sasha owner Steve is a fireman and was unable to care for her right away so
Sasha stayed with us for about a week post surgery where the entire staff of
SCPH fell madly in love with this heroic girl. We all came to realize how
very special Sasha is and why Steve loves her so much.

When Sasha was released from the hospital, she was still unable to use one
of her back legs fully. However, a month after her owners brought her home
Sasha came in for a re-check. Amazingly she lost about 10 pounds, has the use
of both of her back legs now and is standing and walking normally! You can
see Dr. Filipowicz in the picture with her on the left.

Sasha deserves to be Pet Of The Month because she is a true fighter.

September 2011 Ponyo

Ponyo is a 1 year old male kitty who was brought into our Redwood City New_Picture.png
Pet Hospital location a few weeks ago after his original owners noticed that he wasn’t urinating.  Unfortunately for Ponyo his bladder was blocked.  His owners could not afford the expense of surgery so they made the decision to relinquish him into our care.

Dr. Haddad brought him over to San Carlos Pet Hospital Emergency where he was medically treated.

Ponyo has been such a wonderful addition to our hospital; he is very sweet and loves to play and be affectionate with all of our staff, and he is on his way to a full recovery!

Update: Despite all her efforts not to, Dr. Emily Kupprion, one of our fabulous emergency veterinarians, fell madly in love with this little guy! She re-named him “Green Flash” and is adopting him!

Zoey is a 4 year old pit bull terrier. She was adopted about a year ago from the Idaho humanezoey_s.jpeg society and truly has been a blessing.Zoey loves to cuddle, take long walks on the beach loves, long car rides, and loves to play catch. When Zoey became ill and had to stay at the hospital we truly felt lost without her. My husband and I are truly thankful to the staff at San Carlos pet Hospital for bringing Zoey back to life. We would be lost without her.

March 2011- "Nigel"

Meet Nigel our March Pet of the Month. Nigel came to us with a broken rear leg 048.JPG
after being hit by a car. Unfortunately, Nigel needed surgery to repair his leg which
Dr. Haddad was happy to do. However, his owner was financially challenged and needed a little help financing his surgery.

That’s where our Second Chance Fund came in handy. Thanks to the generous donations made by our clients and the sale of our beautifully artisan painted rocks, Nigel was able to have his leg surgically repaired and spent his recovery at San Carlos Pet
Hospital where we came to love and admire his personality and strength.

Nigel is now home with mom and we look forward to seeing him in a few weeks to remove his cast.  Stay out of trouble Nigel!

February 2011- "Gracie"

I don't know exactly when Gracie was born. Must have been some time in 2000. The wife knows. Gracie_1.JPG
Gracie came to us in 2001 when our neighbor had to give her up because they were expecting a baby. So apparently Gracie had to go. Luckily, we had met her earlier during her daily walks and expressed how cute she was. So when the time came for her to go, we were informed by our neighbor that Gracie either went to us or to Beagle Rescue. So that's how Gracie became part of our family.

Gracie is your typical beagle. She barks at anything.  When she was younger, she was also very quick. She once caught a squirrel and presented it as a trophy to mom in the living room. Mom thought it was a doll, that I had gotten Gracie a present...... until she noted that the "doll" had real teeth. So then we suggest to Gracie that it wasn't a good idea to chase squirrels around the yard.

Gracie gets excited when there's company. She likes to "show off" her vocal skills and hang around the visitors.  She really enjoys having our son, Andrew, around.  He doesn't come too often (from LA) but when he does, they immediately get re-acquainted.

 December 2010- "Joe"

Joe.jpgJoe was found alone on the streets with a horribly injured right front leg. A kind citizen found him and after realizing it was more than just a 'sore' leg, brought him to see us at San Carlos Pet Hospital.

Unable to keep Joe or afford the veterinary care needed to determine the extent of his injuries, she surrendered him to San Carlos Pet Hospital. After an examination and radiographs, it was determined that Joe was a very healthy and incredibly sweet young kitten with an irreparable fracture and infection in his right front leg.

We felt the best thing for Joe was to amputate the leg. This was done by Dr. Howard Bouchelle, and Joe is doing amazingly well! Less than 1 week after surgery he is running and playing and feeling great! Thank you Dr. Bouchelle.

We are not sure if we can bear to part with Joe, so he may become the our hospital cat.

While we cannot take in every animal in need, we do try to help when we can in a variety of ways. Our
Second Chance Fund is one way we assist clients who simply cannot afford to provide needed emergency care for their pets.

November 2010 - "Benny"

Please meet Benny Monroe, our November Pet of the Month. Benny has been a patient here at San Carlos Pet Hospital since he was first adopted in 2003. We are so happy to have him as a patient.

013.JPGJune 2010 - "Halo" Blair

Halo was born on March 22, 2010. She is 10 weeks old and 5lbs. She may be small but from birth she has had all the characteristic of a bulldog.....tenacious, stubborn and lots of attitude! Its because of these qualities she is my little bullangel. I lost her mommy during birth and within the first two weeks I lost seven of her brothers and sisters. After going to five different vets I had no answers and felt hopeless. One evening Halo turned gray and was lethargic, I thought I was going to lose her too.

San Carlos Pet Hospital had me bring her right in. I was in tears and devastated when we arrived. They took us straight back and gave her all the attention and love I could ask for. They reassured me that I was taking wonderful care of her and to keep doing what I was doing. They even called to check in on us. No one knows why things happened the way they did but whenever I feel sad I just have to look at Halo and she makes me smile. She had her first set of puppy shots and it was a milestone for us. She continues to grow strong and is more and more like her mommy everyday.  Thank You San Carlos Pet Hospital!

Love,

Corin Blair and Halo

April 2010 - "Jack" Sharkey

my_Nikon_045.jpg

Megan Shareky found Jack as a stray cat 17 years ago. With much begging to her mother, she was allowed to keep him.  He is described as a tough guy with a very sweet heart.  He likes lounging in the sun, chasing rats, but most of all, he loves his wet food.  Whenever Megan arrives home, he is always there to greet her with his loving "MEOW"

maxis__1_1.jpgMarch 2010 - "Max" Bird

Max was adopted into his family 5 1/2 years ago where's he's been king of the castle ever since.

Max was born and raised in Los Angeles but has been a Nor Cal dog for the past two years when his family moved to Belmont. Max was named for having maximum personality packed into his tiny body. He thinks he's 6ft tall and 3ft wide when in reality Max is just about 8lbs! At almost 6 years old this little warriors favorite things haven't changed...

Rubber squeaky toys, cuddling with mom and dad, sun bathing, walks, and rubber squeaky toys!!! He is extremely smart, understanding an estimated over 300 words! Max is "The Protector" so when it came down to protecting him, no one else was to be trusted but Dr. Haddad and her team at the San Carlos Pet Hospital. Max has lost over a pound and had 12 teeth extracted to keep him in prime fighting condition. We are all very proud of Max for once again acting like such a Big Brave Dude!

Thank you, Max and the Bird Family.

May 2011 "Cleo"

May 2, 2011

Dear Drs. and Staff of San Carlos Pet Hospital,

Last week I almost lost my beautiful, perfectly healthy, ten-year-old dog tocleo.JPG
snail poisoning. Many would think that this is an old dog, however, she has much more play, energy, and youth than an average dog. People literally believe she is four-years-old. This is because of her diet, daily runs along the side of my bike and attentive care. Her early death would have been a complete waste.

Thanks to your network and marketing efforts, all I had to do was look back in my emails and call you. I was asked an ETA over the phone and everyone was prepared when I entered. Someone from your team took one look at Cleo and asked me if there
was a possibility of snail poisoning.  My heart sank and my worst fear was reality. The chicken wire fence around the strawberry patch in my yard was not"dog proof". I was now holding a convulsing, stiff, nonambulatory, desperate animal. Doing my best to answer "yes" Cleo was immediately lifted off the ground and carried backto
receive emergency care.

My dog would have been dead had she not received the intravenous life saving medications and continued care from your staff.  As much as I did not want to leave her that night I could tell that she was in great hands. I was also given a scientific, truthful and accurate prognosis that allowed me to sleep that night.

In less than 24 hours my dog was home. She went for a walk that evening and then went to sleep...exhausted. Cleo snores a little and used to be instructed to leave the room. I now have her closer to the side of my bed so I can look at her. I think how grateful I am to all of you. What all your training, long hours and hard work does for people and animals. I know for a fact her life was saved at your hospital. Thank you.

Respectfully,

Dave P.
